Peter Warmingham, BSc (Hons), MIET
Peter Warmingham joined
Rolls-Royce directly after leaving school. After completing three years
of a five year trade apprenticeship at Spadeadam rocket test site, he
transferred to a four year undergraduate apprenticeship, moving to what
is now Roll-Royce’s Marine Power site in Derby, England, in 1970. In
1972 he gained a BSc Honours in Electrical and Electronic engineering,
one of his final subjects being control systems. For the last ten years,
he has worked on the reliability assessments of electrical equipment
used in safety-critical instrumentation and control systems. He also has
a part-time voluntary role as a Rolls-Royce company editor, reviewing
reports written by his colleagues most of which are subject to both
internal and external peer review.
After his wife was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 1995, Mr. Warmingham became
involved with various local and national self-help groups, including the
Derby Branch of BackCare and the Nottingham and East Midlands
Fibromyalgia Support Group. He corresponded with the New Zealand haematologist, Dr Les Simpson, about his Red Blood Cell Shape Analysis
research, after hearing Dr. Simpson give a talk on the topic, and met Dr.
Jacob Tietelbaum at the 1999 and 2002 fibromyalgia conferences.
In January 2001, Mr. Warmingham became the first coordinator of the Medical
Advisory Board set up to support the newly formed All Party
Parliamentary Group for Fibromyalgia. In July 2001 he attended a seminar
on chronic fatigue syndrome held as part of the British Association for
Psychopharmacology’s Summer Meeting in the International Centre,
Harrogate. In April 2002, he attended the Fibromyalgia Association UK’s
Professional’s Conference, also held in the International Centre,
Harrogate.
Through Thyroid UK, Mr. Warmingham first made contact with the
Nottingham-based Thyroid Self Help Group. It was here where he was introduced to the
work and ideas of Dr. John C. Lowe, so coming to realise the importance
of hypothyroidism in relation to fibromyalgia. In October 2002, Mr.
Warmingham wrote an article for the East Midlands Fibromyalgia Support
Group newsletter called “Fibromyalgia has Been Solved!”
In 2003, Mr. Warmingham joined the committee of Thyroid UK where he met Dr. Barry Durrant-Peatfield and ran the Thyroid UK advisory panel for several
years.
He has recently become a trustee of that organisation.
Mr. Warmingham has had articles published in the Fibromyalgia Association UK’s
magazine, Thyroid UK’s newsletter and website, the East Midlands
Fibromyalgia Support Group’s newsletter, and the Environmental Issues
Forum (EIF) newsletter. He also contributes to and edits the Thyroid
Self Help Group’s quarterly newsletter.
